Vancouver’s Christmas Market
November 20 to December 24, 2019.
Jack Poole Plaza
An item on everybody’s bucket list has to be a visit to Europe in December to experience the many Christmas markets that pop up in every town and village. There is even one in front of the Munich airport as you make your way to the train station on the way to your hotel.
Take in the sights and smells of the Christmas Market. There are row upon row of wooden stalls illuminated with twinkle lights and all packed high with sweets, treats and treasures. Artisans have come to town from the surrounding country side bringing with them unique and thoughtful items which will surely be that perfect gift for that someone special on your Christmas shopping list. …or maybe that special Christmas gift to you from yourself! Stroll though the market with a hot mug of mulled wine to keep your hands warm and your taste buds satisfied. Bundled in your scarf and toque, watch your step on the snow covered cobble stones.
A simple meal is shared with family and friends out in the chilly winter air standing at covered outdoor tables. A hot sizzling sausage on a fresh Kaiser bun prepared right on the spot is the perfect complement to the event. You follow your dinner with a homemade desert you find in yet another stall. It is unlike any baked goods you have ever eaten. Fresh baked with real whipped cream, and perhaps just a bit of rum. You forget about counting calories and tell yourself there will be plenty of time for that in the New Year.
Sadly most of us won’t make it to the Christmas markets of Germany or Austria this year, but we can make it to Vancouver’s Christmas Market this year which is every bit as authentic as the Christmas Market’s of Europe. Yes the backdrop of the beautiful old buildings of Vienna isn’t there, but they have been replaced by the magnificent view of the North Shore Mountains from Jack Poole Plaza. The cobble stones of Jack Poole Plaza may be newer than those in Europe, but the experience, the feeling of Christmas joy, being with friends and family is every bit the same as what you would experience at the Christmas Markets of imperial Europe.
